Quite a few recent studies have shown just how well mesenchymal stem cell therapy works for inflammatory diseases like Crohn’s, IBD and UC.
One was published in 2018 and looked at the effectiveness of MSC’s for inflammatory diseases and showed that they “orchestrate local and systemic innate and adaptive immune responses through the release of various mediators, including immunosuppressive molecules, growth factors, exosomes, chemokines, complement components and various metabolites.”

Immunoregulatory mechanisms of mesenchymal stem and stromal cells in inflammatory diseases.
Another recent study published in 2019 looked at the effectiveness of mesenchymal stem cells for perianal Crohns Disease. The results were fantastic for abating symptoms and for healing any fistulas involved.
An interesting case presentation in 2020 published in the Journal of Crohns Colitis showed remission in a patient after an intense childhood dealing with horrific symptoms. At the age of 18, the patient was steroid, ABX and G-CSF dependent. He had 25 hospital admissions and over 130 blood tests in a span of only two years.
At that point, the patient received allogeneic stem cell therapy. Right away, the patient’s GI symptoms dramatically improved along with pain reduction. According to the study, “He weaned off opiate analgesia, his neutropenia and lymphopenia resolved and he has not been hospitalized again in 2.5 years of follow-up.”
A study from 2011 in the same Journal of Crohns and Colitis followed 3 patients who had exhausted all conventional therapies. They did NOT want surgery, so they received stem cell transplantation. Two out of the three have remained in remission throughout the six year follow up, while one of the treatments only lasted for 3 years. That’s still amazing considering how safe the therapy is!

The authors looked at 15 studies and determined that “MSCs appear to be potentially safe and effective in large numbers of animal and clinical (human) trials”. (Shi et al, Stem Cell Res Ther. 2019; 10: 266.)
Another study from 2020 in Current Drug Targets (2020 May 3.) performed a review of available studies and showed that stem cell transplantation works great for inflammatory bowel disease, Crohns and Ulcerative Colitis.
